Getting a domain is as vital as purchasing a new car because once you make that BIG mistake, its gonna stick to you until you get enough cash to get a better one or a deadlier one… Domain renting in Nigeria is one big deal! Yes! Apart from the easy steps of using your credit card in making payments, it goes far! far!! beyond what you think. Having spent time on the web since 2009 and also delving into domaining as business in 2014, I can tell you the importance of using a .com and I know the importance of the “king” of extensions and also the side effects of other domains. Furthermore, I am not disputing you stance: when I talk about .ng, so get open minded and along as I let you flow by the wave.
1. COST
Being a starter, most of the time, we’re always cash conscious. Starting up a website for a personal blog or business can be liquidating as we try as much as possible to manage what we have to get what we want at the end of the day… The cost for purchasing a .NG domain is damm high compared to its counterparts like .IN, .UK, .RU, .CF, .PK, .GA, .TK. Being a starter or cash conscious or broke nigga (no vex) I’d advise you to stay clear as getting a .NG isn’t child’s play, 15k isn’t beans or maimai. It’s about time price. most new bloggers can’t afford it.
2. STIGMATIZATION
Someone said to me: I have scanned the web and only a very few domains are live on .com.ng or .ng. Why aren’t we embracing our own brand of extension like it is obtainable in UK, Australia, South Africa etc? A few of TechFecters responded:
1. Because they believe that anything NG is fake
2. It isn’t recognized worldwide as it is termed country-side.
3. Anything related to .com.ng or ng.com na scam our image on the internet has been tarnished. I need not talk more, there you have the negative influences of Nigerian TLDS.
3. POOR MANAGEMENT
NIRA hasn’t been doing their jobs as they should. In the UK, people prefer .co.uk to .com more than 60% of the time. The management of .ng domains are not as mature and transparent as their foreign counterparts. Search around the Internet, you’ll see a lot of stories. One of them trended on nairaland. A Chinese guy who bought .ng domains and it got ‘swallowed’. And then again, it is unnecessarily costly considering that Nigeria is trying to catch up to the modern world. All faults goes to Nira! They tarnished .ng with some of their shady deals!
4. POOR AUDIENCE
I personally dont use ng because i am aiming for a world audience, it is sites that are aiming for nigerian audiences that use the com.ng or ng TLDs actually they both are very proffesional but if your site is not about lets say “Jobs in nigeria”, “Nigerian songs”, “News in Nigeria” e.t.c then dont use .ng SIMPLE!
5. PRE-DOMAIN HIJACK
I purportedly listed this last because this is serious and unfair. Be careful when searching for domain names on whogohost, as usual Naija people always want to play a fast one on people. I discovered that any time i seach for a nice name on whogohost.com 1 week later someone from their office will grab it before you do. picture below its an evidence of my claim. I searched for a domain name ( bingo.com.ng) 3 days later it was taken by one Collins Adetuberu who work in whogohost office. So guys my advice is, if you are not ready to pay for the domain name under 24hrs don’t even think of searching for it in Nigerian domain sellers. eg web4africa or whogohost.
SEE PROVE:
Nigeria is a tainted name on the web. Blame the scammers. Use .com to beat the odds, unless you are not a businessman but a patriot.
